The Weight of a Soul: “21 Grams” – Milan Reid’s Latest Single (That Demanded to Exist)

There’s a lot of debate around the human spirit, including its very existence. It was decided some time ago (by a Massachusetts physician with the downright jolly name, Duncan MacDougall) that the weight of the soul is just 21 grams – seems incredibly light, but then how do we go about weighing such things in the first place? Souls, their true heaviness, the weight of meeting of two souls, those are things that Milan Reid, and his new single, are concerned with.

Heavy, yet weightless
The sound of ’21 Grams’ is instantly reminiscent of a foggy day, hazy with a mist of nostalgia, wistful and familiar but fresh and clear – like a past feeling, renewed. In fact, ’21 Grams’ does harken to the past – Reid’s own. Released February 2021, the single builds on the musician’s acoustic foundations while keeping true to the melancholy, emotionally visceral, narrative-based sound aesthetic that Milan introduced to the world with his 2020 debut, ‘Closeness Over Time’.

There is something new in the sound of ’21 Grams’, as Milan weaves in new intricate soundscapes and elements to his already unique indie alternative sound.

“If only it could wait until next year, that would’ve been really neat,” Milan muses, summing up the wistfulness of his latest musical creation

’21 Grams’ tells of a breakup, and effectively portrays the weight and listlessness of loss. It’s in the sound of Reid’s voice, the almost-hopeful early shoegaze vibe, the heart-clawing guitars accompanying a tale of the sun setting on what cound have been, and what is left. Like ‘Closeness Over Time’, there is something deeply resonant about ’21 Grams’ – like maybe we weren’t there, but so many of us have been there. Infusing traditional pop rock elements with dreamy experimentalism, ’21 Grams’ is haunting as it is melodic.
